Closer Natural sites: BARRAÑAN VALLEY AND SISALDE FOREST

Barrañán valley, through which the boedo river runs, is an important natural area. The meadows found along the lower section of the river and sisalde forest are especially noteworthy. 83 different species of flora and 84 different bird species (most importantly reed buntings (emberiza schoeniclus)) have been identified in these areas, along with 11 different types of mammals (including eurasian otters), 9 species of reptiles and 6 amphibian species.   This forest is one of the remaining testimonies to the galicia of yesteryear in the arteixo area.  Over an approximately 10 hectare area the following trees proliferate: black alders (alnus glutinosa); large gray willows (salix atrocinerea) along the banks of the sisalde river; chestnut trees (castanea sativa); and also english oaks (quercus robur).

Another spot which is worthy of note is the "O Rexedoiro" dam, which offers a wide variety of nesting, migratory and winter-visiting birds.   Since 1984 a total of 118 different species of wild birds have been registered in the dam (59 of which being  purely aquatic).  The following species make the dam one of the most important breeding sites in all of galicia: little grebes; mallard ducks; and gadwalls.
