A Illa de Arousa is a privileged example of the beauty characterizing the coasts of the Rias Baixas region.
The stunning island is situated on the right hand area of the Ría de Arousa, and joins Vilanova via a two kilometre bridge that was built in 1985. Its morphology reminds us of the number seven, as if it were representing its surface area - 7km²- and where there is a population of almost 5,000. The coastline covers a distance of 36km with 11km of beaches.
The meandering coastline of A Illa de Arousa offers the visitor a whole host of beautiful white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters; from the great extensions at Camaxe, Camaxiñas or Area da Secada to the little coves such as Punta Carreirón surrounded by dunes and pine trees, where bathers can enjoy a combination of peace and nature, far from the noise and crowds of the city. The beautiful little island Xiadoiro Areoso is particularly worthy of mention.
The most interesting areas to visit are: the lighthouse, the little
island of Areoso and the Carreirón Natural Park.
The island is a particularly privileged area for bird life, and part of the region Punta Carreirón was awarded the category Zona Internacional de Especial Protección para las Aves (lit. International area for the special protection of birdlife) and its integration in the
Natural Intertidal Park Umia - O Grove - A Lanzada Punta Carreirón and Lagoa de Bodeira.
The opportunity to witness heron fishing in marshland or the spectacular flight of ducks is an experience that is possible from a privileged viewpoint. Two special bird watching cabins were designed for the study of the birdlife in Punta Carreirón.
The region's abundant nature and wildlife encourages a great diversity of ecosystems- dunes, marshland, thicket, pine forest and an impressive submarine landscape can be found all along the coast.
