Whale-watching boats wanting to contribute to the Programme can be awarded a Blue Flag by complying with the Blue Flag for Whale-watching Boat's Environmental Code of Conduct:
- All hazardous and toxic waste such as oil, paint, used batteries are delivered to assigned official collecting sites, and sewage from boats will be released in accordance with national regulations.
- Recyclable products and raw materials such as glass and paper are used to extent possible and the use of single use products will be avoided as much as possible.
- Environmentally friendly products and products with official eco-labels are preferably used for repair and maintenance, including paints, anti-fouling agents, paint removers and detergents.
- We encourage the companies that service the vessel to follow our example.
- The relevant authorities are notified immediately about accidents that might cause environmental damage, fishing regulations is respected and sailing speed is adjusted in the vicinity of fishing vessels. Furthermore extreme caution is shown when the vessel is entering the harbour area.
- All national regulation and best environmental practice for nature and environmental protection is respected, special precaution is taken in the vicinity of breeding birds and fish species, and the vessel and its crew will set an example in this respect.
- A special effort is made in order to protect and maintain vessels of cultural and historical importance.
- Speed and engine maintenance is aimed at maximising energy efficiency and minimizing pollution.
- Passengers receive information about marine life, fish, seabirds and whales and the importance of protecting marine ecosystems from pollution.
- The well-being and security of the passengers is always a priority and information about the Blue Flag is available for the passengers.
