Around one hundred HSBC Eco-Schools students & teachers, and HSBC volunteers took part in a beachside competition hosted by Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF) to raise awareness of the conservation needs of marine turtles and to mark UAE Environment Day on February 4, 2012.
The event was held at the Le Meridien Mina Seyahi & Westin Beach Resort & Marina, which was recently awarded with a Blue Flag, making it the first Blue Flag beach in Dubai.
Youngsters participating in the competitions armed themselves with craft materials and set out to explore their creative talent after learning about the marine turtles’ biology, lifecycle, threats and conservation needs as part of EWS-WWF’s Marine Turtle Conservation Project.
Children aged between 6 and 12 years were asked to illustrate their very own comic strip tale with a central turtle conservation message, while those in the age group 13-18years faced the challenge of creating a 3D model of the majestic animal. A highly exciting fun turtle quiz was also held over lunch, and the competition winners were rewarded with attractive prizes. HSBC volunteers participated in almost all activities of the day, right from judging turtle models and comic strips to managing the day’s proceedings.
