Blue Flag fun day comes to Leven
Beach enthusiasts young and old were invited to visit Leven on Friday 13 August, between 11am and 4pm, to take part in a day of fun on the sand. Encouraging responsible beach use by promoting messages about litter, dog fouling and safety in a fun way Keep Scotland Beautiful staff was based in a small marquee on the beach for the day.
This summer 56 Scottish beaches are flying the Seaside Award flag while seven, five of which are in Fife, have also been awarded the coveted international Blue Flag.
Keep Scotland Beautiful, as co-ordinator of both beach award schemes, and in celebration of the Blue Flag being achieved at Leven, for the second time, has organised a day of environmental games for children on the beach to coincide with the official hoisting of the Blue Flag by Fife Council.
The Blue Flag is recognised across the world and those that achieve the accolade must ensure all facilities are clean, and environmental management and information provision standards are excellent.
Donna Niven, Programme Manager with Keep Scotland Beautiful, said, “Beaches can be fun places to visit, but Keep Scotland Beautiful wants to make sure that when visitors leave they do so with good memories. To help achieve this litter relay races, sand castle and wildlife picture competitions and memory games will be organised throughout the Blue Flag day to highlight to visitors in a fun way, why it is important to dispose of litter appropriately, a little bit about biodiversity and also how to stay safe on a beach”.
Successful Blue Flag days have already taken place at three other Blue Flag beaches this summer, Burntisland in Fife, Coldingham in the Scottish Borders and Broughty Ferry near Dundee.
A map showing all award winning beaches with descriptions, directions, facilities and pictures can be found at www.keepscotlandbeautiful.org/coastal, along with an option for people to ‘score the shore’ and rate their favourite award beaches so that other visitors know what to expect when they arrive.
