At an event on 20 July 2011 in the municipality of Melendugno in Puglia in Southern Italy, FEE was awarded the “Acqua Mater Prize” for its outstanding commitment in encouraging municipalities to pursue and promote sustainable development of beaches and marinas through its Blue Flag Programme.
In the motivation from the municipality of Melendugno it was emphasized that the recognition is, in particular, given for:- 1) the encouragement of good environmental practices through several activities of environmental education and information; 2) the careful evaluation of beaches and their facilities; 3) the support to the public and private sectors that look at sustainable tourism as a successful, though sometimes hard to achieve, objective.
Finn Bolding Thomsen, Director of FEE, upon receiving the award stated : “I am very honoured on behalf of FEE to receive this recognition. FEE is normally the entity recognising the efforts of municipalities when awarding beaches and marinas with the Blue Flag, and this time FEE receives an award from the municipalities for its efforts for the Blue Flag Programme. This recognition further encourages FEE to continue to do its utmost to maintain the high quality of the Blue Flag eco-label and to continue raising the awareness of the public about sustainable tourism”.
