Votsalakia, Beach located in Piraeus
Votsalakia beach, a coast of Piraeus Municipality, is the best organized and exploitive beach of our city. Its physical type is beach with sand and includes the most tourist resort area of the city of Piraeus, at a distance of about 800 meters from Pasalimani. The beach consists of the most modern and developed recreation and sports facilities including an attraction pole for the people of Piraeus and the nearby communities. Specifically, it has been created a beautiful park inside the beach district consisting of grass and plants. The area of the park is about 100 meters long whereas in the center of the beach there is a huge outdoor café, which expands to the sand. In addition, within the beach area a newly built beach volleyball court is placed as well as a special swimming pool center, which functions as a training center for the athletes of synchronized swimming. Just beside the organized beach, the newly established, modern swimming pool of Piraeus Municipality has been constructed as well as a series of tennis and football courts. A number of environmental education activities take place in the beach area, such as lectures, cleaning up the shore with the participation of the school community, conferences, celebration happenings and various manifestations – especially during the day of the Environment – painting galleries in the Municipal facilities of the beach, swimming teaching classes, guideline provided by members of the Community or by special scientists to groups of pupils concerning topics related to the protection of the marine ecosystems and the flora and fauna of the region e.t.c. Water sports activity, such as beach volleyball, wind surfing and water ski, is constantly present in the area. Above the Votsalakia beach, the hill of Kastela, the most picturesque and may be the most beautiful – with such a majestic view – part of Piraeus is rising in all his grandeur. It should be considered as a fact for the stranger, who has reached Piraeus in order to proceed to Athens to visit and walk this Piraeus neighborhood. Kastela combines tradition to evolution. From traditional houses with stairs and small yards to modern supermarkets and enormous hotels, all seem to fit in the same place. The length of the Votsalakia beach is about 1500 meters and the width of the beach is approximately 100 meters. The flora type consists of a great spectrum of trees and plants like palm-trees, eucalyptus, ornamental plants, grass, e.t.c. The access to the beach is accomplished by all available means. There is a full pedestrian facility based on the natural slope of the ground (downward slope), which is very helpful for disabled people.
